Farmers of a hacienda in this traditionally rice-growing town celebrated their bountiful harvest by parading representations of farm denizens such as the carabao and maya. The festival was eventually adopted as Bayawan City’s primary cultural and tourism event. The elaborate street dances honor the centerpiece icon, the scarecrow (“tawo-tawo”), as guardian of the rice fields and sentinels of Bayawan’s prosperity.
