Built by Augustinians, the church’s construction was completed in 1869 during the Spanish colonial period. Renowned for its unique pediment, it depicts the Spanish victory over the Moors in the Battle of Tétouan, making it an architectural and historical marvel.
In 1980, the then National Historical Institute designated the church as a National Historical Site, and in 2001, it was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. This designation includes the adjacent convent ruins, which survived World War II with notable features like a well and kiln.
The church underwent renovations in the 1980s and again in 2015, with efforts made to restore its original design.
