Pan-Philippine Hwy, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, PhilippinesFestival Date: June 12, 2024 Discover the celebration that began when the Manobo leaders came together just weeks before the province’s 26th foundation anniversary to create the event in 1993. They were presided over by provincial leader Datu Lipus Makapandong, Governor D.O. Plaza. The weeklong gathering is in celebration of the indigenous group’s sociocultural and arts exposition throughout Agusan Valley, where skills and culture are depicted through ritual activities. The special week, coinciding with Agusan del Sur’s Foundation Day on June 17, begins with a ritual called the Panawagtawag, where a Manobo high priest, known as ‘baylan,’ calls on the spirits of the forest to spare the day for the celebration and drive away any evil spirits that may threaten the grand celebration. The baylan then slaughters a pig and offers its blood to appease the spirits so they do not harm the celebrating mortals.
