Kahimunan Festival

Butuan CityFestival Date: January 16, 2024 Every third Sunday of January, locals come together for a thanksgiving event dedicated to the Child Jesus, as well to as pay homage to indigenous customs in the region. Kahimunan Festival was initiated in 1987 by Father Juanito Belino, the inaugural parish priest of Santo Niño Parish in Barangay Libertad in Butuan City. The festival derives its name from the Manobo term ‘kahimunan,’ which means ‘to gather.’ It is also known as the Full Moon Festival, encompassing a range of rituals conducted by Agusan del Norte’s Lumad population at the start of the planting season. The ceremonies involve chanting, singing, and the playing of traditional instruments, such as drums, gongs, and bamboo percussion instruments. The Manobo, Higaonon, and Banwaon groups of neighboring Agusan del Sur are also said to commemorate Kahimunan, or Kaamulan.
