Get DirectionsLocated in Iloilo City, the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral, also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles, stands as a beacon of faith and devotion. Designated a historical landmark by the National Historical Institute in 1976, this cathedral is a vital part of Iloilo’s religious and cultural heritage.
Originally constructed in 1864 by Bishop Mariano Cuartero, O.P., the cathedral was rebuilt in 1956 after an earthquake in 1948 destroyed the original structure. Its restoration was led by Archbishop Jose Maria Cuenco. The cathedral gained further prominence when St. Pope John Paul II declared Our Lady of the Candles the Patroness of Western Visayas during his visit in 1981. The cathedral also honors St. Elizabeth of Hungary as its patron.
Architecturally, Jaro Cathedral is renowned for its Romanesque Revival style, featuring arched windows, entryways, square towers, and a distinctive red-roofed dome. Its unique triangular and asymmetrical façade adds to its iconic status. The belfry, located at Jaro Park, was reconstructed in the 1990s after the original was destroyed in the 1948 earthquake.
Jaro Cathedral is also known as the “Male” Church, contrasting with Molo’s “feminist church.” Here, Our Lady of the Candles is the only female statue among a collection of male saints.
Visitors are advised to arrive before 5 PM to appreciate the cathedral’s intricate façade in daylight. Daily masses are held in English or Hiligaynon, providing spiritual solace to many. This historic and architectural gem remains a symbol of enduring faith in Iloilo.AddressPHF4+9CH, Jaro, Iloilo City, 5000 IloiloContact DetailsEmail: [email protected]Operational Hours9:00 AM to 5:00 PMBest time to visitDuring scheduled Mass and special eventsHow to get thereUpon reaching Iloilo City, you can ride a tricycle or jeepney that can drop you off in front of the church.Things to-doPray, visit Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria
