Diura Fishing Village, located in the eastern portion of Mahatao town, is home to a group of fishermen known as the Mataw. They engage in traditional ‘arayu’ fishing. Arayu, otherwise known as the mahi-mahi fish, is flecked with yellow or gold along its body, which is why it is also called ‘dorado,’ or gold in Spanish. The Mataw have a rite called ‘kapayvanuvanua,’ which marks the beginning of the fishing season, generally occurring in March.
