In 1899, the poet Jose Palma y Velasquez penned the poem ‘Filipinas’ in Bautista, Pangasinan. Originally written in Spanish, the poem found its way to the public eye when it was published in ‘La Independencia’, a newspaper. The poem later became the lyrics to the ‘Marcha Nacional Filipina.’ Because of the historical and cultural significance of his contribution, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) granted this National Historical Marker in 2015 in Palma’s honor.
